Excellent durability and efficiency: honeycomb coated composite turbine blade seals

As a tailor-made gas turbine manufacturer, we understand the critical role that efficient seals play in engine performance. To address the limitations of traditional sealing structures, we have developed innovative cellular-coated composite sealing structures that effectively improve the efficiency and service life of gas turbines.

The preparation process usually includes the following stages:

  • Substrate preparation: Turbine blade tips are surface-cleaned and treated to ensure optimal coating adhesion. This may include sandblasting or chemical etching.
  • Coating application: The abrasive sealing coating is deposited onto the prepared surface of the blade tip using the coating method of choice.
  • Post-treatment: This may include heat treatment to improve adhesion and enhance the performance of the coating, or further surface treatment to change the characteristics of the coating.
  • Inspection and quality control: Rigorous inspection methods, including microscopy and mechanical testing, are used to verify coating thickness, uniformity and compliance with design specifications.

Our innovative honeycomb seal design significantly enhances aero-engine performance. Its unique hexagonal core structure dramatically reduces air leakage between rotating blades and the casing, while maintaining high strength and wear resistance. Primarily used in aero-engine compressors and low-pressure turbines, this design minimizes radial clearance, providing exceptional gas path sealing and improved engine efficiency. Manufactured from high-performance nickel-based superalloys like Hastelloy and Haynes 214, the honeycomb structure ensures reliable operation in extreme high-temperature and high-pressure environments. Our robust and proven manufacturing process involves precisely corrugating metal sheets, spot welding them into a honeycomb structure, and finally brazing it securely to the substrate.

Recognizing the challenges of blade friction and high-temperature oxidation, we pioneered a honeycomb-coating composite design. A sprayed high-performance coating creates a dense thermal barrier, effectively reducing thermal shock and oxidative corrosion, thus significantly extending the honeycomb’s service life and improving its thermal shock resistance. This composite structure uniquely combines the honeycomb’s inherent strength with the superior oxidation and thermal shock resistance of the coating, representing a major breakthrough in aero-engine sealing technology. Our cellular-coated composite seals outperform traditional coated seals, offering enhanced fracture toughness and thermal shock resistance for more reliable, longer-lasting gas turbine sealing solutions. We are committed to continuous innovation, providing customers with cutting-edge sealing technologies and superior products.

Studies have shown that some scholars have designed a honeycomb reinforced structure, the use of laser or electron beam technology to coat the surface of the substrate, then the honeycomb structure is brazed on the substrate, and then APS technology is used to prepare a multi-angle coating on the honeycomb structure, and finally the coating surface structure is changed by machining, processed into a curved or stepped shape. Through the surface processing configuration, the coating roughness is reduced, so that the sealing coating can form a good match with the compressor or turbine blade, so as to improve the sealing effect of the coating. We optimized our turbine blade coating technology based on our production capacity and customer’s product requirements through research reports issued by scholars.
